With the current advances in broadband Internet technology most people have forgotten about how important dial up internet used to be. At one time dial up was the only way you could access the internet and still has some benefits today.

dial up service

Connection speed was not one of the main priorities in the early days of the internet because the data being used was very simple. This changed greatly when users began to demand multimedia rich content. Due the bottlenecks that come with dial up internet it is hard to access music and videos which is something that does not present a problem when using broadband internet.

Once upon a time, there were no DSL or Cable connections so dial up was all that was available. The story started with a 9800 baud modem and then later moved on to 28.8kb/s which was new technology and at its peak managed 56kb/s.

Dial up was so popular due to the fact it was convenient meaning it was easy to access for most customers. Remote connection could be achieved through copper wires therefore giving access to the internet through a telephone infrastructure.

One of the main problems with this technology is that there was quite a lot of interference due to the amount of electromagnetic properties from the copper wires. If a person lived in a very rural area they were not able to get very fast or stable connections which lead to some individuals becoming frustrated.

DSL and cable services came about after a government intervention. In order to create a faster more reliable service, these methods used the existing infrastructure but also used higher frequencies which meant more data could be transferred.

Although broadband is now used in the mainstream by most, there are still a number of individuals who still use dial up internet. If you still use dial up then there a a few techniques you can employ to make you service run at its full capacity. Keep the number of tabs open in your browser to a minimum. Each browser tab will consume come bandwidth in order to stay connected to the net. It is also a good idea to make sure the line you use for your internet is not shared with a telephone line. Call waiting amongst other features with a telephone service might create interference that will have a direct impact on a person online experience limiting their connection speed.
