One of the easiest things for an internet marketer or an search engine optimizer to neglect is on-page SEO. Ever since Google started using links as the primary indicator of the relevance of a site, most SEO experts have focused on usability tests. While links are crucial, on-page SEO should not be forgotten. Here are some of the most important ranking factors that have nothing to do with external links.

The factors are divided into “highly important” and “moderately important.” The moderately important factors should only be used if they don’t damage the user experience.

Highly Important Keyword Factors:

1. Keyword in Title Tag – The keyword should be listed in the title tag of the page. This is considered extremely important. Many feel that it should also be used at the beginning of the title.

2. Keyword in Anchor Text from Internal Links – Links from external sites are not the only links that influence rankings. A page on your site that has links pointing toward it from other pages on the same site containing the keyword tend to rank better for that keyword.

3. Keyword in Root Domain Name – This means that the keyword is listed not only in the title of the page, but in the actual URL of the site. We are talking here about the URL of the entire site, not the specific page.

Moderately Important Keyword Factors:

4. Keyword in H1 Tag – Many experts believe that it helps to include the keyword in a headline within the article. This would be ideal for secondary keywords, and might be suspiciously repetitive to do with the primary keyword. As with the title, some feel that it should be at the beginning of the headline.

5. Keyword in Link Anchor Text – If the keyword is used in a link on the page, some experts feel that this helps with relevance, although there is some mild controversy on this subject.

6. Keyword in First 100 Words – Most agree that this helps somewhat.

Highly Important Non-Keyword Factor:

7. Helpful, Unique Content – This is considered the most important on-page ranking factor. While there is some dispute over whether Google can actually identify “helpful” content, it is certainly their goal to rank helpful content, and if the content is low quality you could lose rankings in a manual review.

Moderately Important Non-Keyword Factors:

8. “Freshness” of Content – Old content can and does rank very well, but newer content often receives a temporary bonus, especially if the site tends to rank well overall.

9. Location of Page – If the page is closer to the “root” level of the site, many experts believe that it tends to rank better.

10. Internal Link Popularity – The sheer number of internal links pointing to a page can also play an important part.
